MEETING (Monday January 18) at 7pm

There is a concern that there is no need for a meeting this evening. This is NOT TRUE. We need to coordinate our efforts and make sure everyone is aware of the basic information and our options around it.

For example, when we ask the fire-fighters within Fire Camp 8 about the prison, we are putting them at risk of losing their jobs. It does us and them no good to bombard them with our concerns when they are not at liberty to share details. All of our questions need to be directed to the Fire Chief and governmental personnel.

Despite the rain, PLEASE JOIN US AT THE MEETING TONIGHT AT 7PM.

  2. Here is an action plan from the Communication Committee:

    Immediate Priorities (tomorrow):

    • Gather all names from tonight’s sign in sheet and get into an Excel sheet. A template is attached.
    • Upload this list to Googledocs which enables any of us to update and change simultaneously.
    • Add your names and contact info to the attached Excel sheet (see sheet named Comm Committee).
    • Write a press release about tonight’s meeting, the focus of which will be the fact that the 2/25th move in date has been softened to “we’re only considering it.” - ALYSON
    • Draft templates of a letter and an email that we can distribute to all Malibu-ites to send to the right political leaders and heads of the Fire Dept and Dept of Corrections.
    • Distribute the templates to the entire community and encourage each Malibu denizen to write, email and call (all 3 actions); this will create an initial landslide of pressure and communication.
    • Gather list of all politicians and leaders of Fire Dept and Dept of Corrections with addresses and emails.
    • Develop a method to get everyone who came to the meeting tonight to email the template to at least 5 of their Malibu based friends and networks.

    Next Actions:

    • Continue to build the list of neighbors:
    o Blog
    o Facebook
    o Phone trees
    o Flyers
o Collection of lists from local businesses, newspapers
    o Mailing list aggregators
    • Develop an intern team to make phone calls on a regular basis to all Malibu denizen’s and to political leaders we are targeting.
    • Meet weekly in a conference call to share updates and plan next steps.
    • Develop a mechanism to build our Malibu data base of those who live and work here.
    • Communicate with them to get involved
    o Blog
    o Direct mail
    o Local signage
    o Email
    o Events
    • Encourage them to get involved and push against the action.
    • Develop events (stand ins at meetings, groups showing for political processes, etc.) that bring attention and show community allegiance and stance.
    • Create an autoresponder program with pre-loaded communications and the neighborhood list that schedules email communications to the parties we need to influence.
    • Monitor the news
    • Monitor the community
    • Respond with appropriate actions
o Press releases on newsworthy accomplishments we make to keep the prison from becoming a reality
o Press conferences on newsworthy announcements
o Find celebrity spokespeople in our community who are willing to speak on our behalf

  3. For those of you who don't believe that others outside of Malibu really do not have an iota of sympathy for the "safety" of anyone fortunate enough to live in Malibu, here is a comment made by my personal best friend who lives in Northern California. This was in response to me posting information about this meeting tonight on my Facebook page: "Not in ur back yard! Prisons are soooo unsightly. "
